Today we started out late in the day to drive around the Dry Lake near our site, hoping to hop out and do a short hike or two along the way. We didn't quite find the road that went around the lake, but we ended up instead at the highway, across from Inspiration Wash, which, according to the map, was the access to a place called Inspiration Point. That sounded interesting, so we took the jeep, our packed snacks, and our courage, and hit the sand. This is the side of road S22 that is known as the Borrego Badlands, and soon after the flat landscape you see above, there is a land that looks as if it were straight out of a 1950's science fiction movie. Think post-apocalyptic. We hiked for about 45 minutes near the beginning of the mountains, then went on to Inspiration Point, and then wound our way on roads that took us through massive cliffs of hardened sand until we reached some sand dunes. Since it was getting nearer to sunset, and we weren't quite sure if we could get through the dunes, we turned about and headed for home. It was unusual, interesting, and quite kidney-rattling (I guess that's just the off-road experience!).

We reached Inspiration Point and saw a fantastic 360 degree view. We could even see Coyote Mountain, and some of the RVs near our site!

See the little RVs at the base of the mountain? |
