CULP VALLEY CAMPGROUND TRAILS

Today we did some hiking in the Culp Valley area of Anza-Borrego. A gorgeous, albeit steep and windy, drive through rocky mountains (Bighorn Sheep habitat) took us to the Culp Valley Campground. First, we did the Culp Valley Trail, which is a wheelchair accessible gravel trail with a 91' elevation change. It has two gravelled, flat overlook areas with beautiful views; from the second viewpoint you can see Borrego Springs and its surrounding citrus groves, as well as valley and mountain views in many directions.
Next, we tried to hike the Pena Springs Trail, described as a short, steep trail to an artesian spring. Unfortunately, the signage left quite a bit to be desired, and we ended up on the California Horse and Hiking Trail. The trail was dry and steep, but we enjoyed some fabulous rock configurations and more expansive vistas before we figured out that we had truly gone amiss from the Springs.

We back-tracked and finally found the correct trail - it was worth it. Birds were flying from tree to shrub, we noted about half a dozen different kinds of butterflies, and there were even some colorful blooms dotted here and there.
This is the trough fed by the spring - wildlife congregates here
