Today we did the Ajo Mountain Scenic Drive. It is a 21-mile one-way loop drive through stunning mountain vistas and fabulous cactus diversity! We weren't quite feeling up to hiking yet (can't wait for these colds to pass), so we just did the drive and took some photographs. There was so much to share that I've decided to just post a few pics at a time. At one of the stops, this huge bee/wasp started flying around the Chinook, and as we tried to capture it (in photos, that is!) about a half dozen others showed up! They seemed to be attracted to the hottest parts of the vehicle: the tires, the radiator, etc., but they were elusive, never stopping but briefly. Not sure what they thought about us!

This was the smallest one, he probably checks out all the tourists! |

Here's one admiring himself in the chrome bumper |

The coloration on these is fascinating |

Not sure if he wants to be photographed... |
|
My favorite photo, he looks like a drawing from a comic book! |

Okay, this one's a little scary... |

They're trying to get in! |
Oh, and I did say there were birds. It was actually just one bird. This is a raven taking wing from the top of a Saguaro cactus, back at our campground while we were dumping the tanks.
