The mountains here are majestic and diverse. New and different ranges appear constantly throughout the drive, in an almost overwhelming array of rocky cliffs, stratified geological masterpieces, and rolling, cactus-covered mounds. We did the drive in the middle of the day (it took us about 3 hours, because we stopped so frequently to take pictures) and the sun was at its brightest.

The next photos are from a point above a huge wash, where indigenous peoples grew beans and squash when heavy rainfall drenched the ground as it flowed through to the desert bottom. The mountains furthest away are in Mexico - we're about 5 miles from the Mexican border, and there is a Mexican Biosphere Preserve (the sister park to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument) just over the border.
