THE CHIHUAHUAN DESERT

We've been in the Chihuahuan Desert for several days now, and I haven't seen a single Chihuahua. Much less a huge (or even a small) herd of the little hairless beasts. There are lots of birds here, though, and the mornings are full of flutterings, twitterings, and lovely birdsong in general. Today I saw a group of 6 large black birds with white on their wings, circling and dancing near the hillside behind our campsite. I couldn't get a good photo, but I'll include this rather fuzzy picture just to prove that there were actually birds here (imagine that there were 5 more, all circling and swooping on the hillside and against the clouds):
